The exceptions granted to the driver of an ambulance under this chapter shall apply only when such driver is making use of red flashing lights visible from the front of such ambulance and a siren or whistle capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 500 feet. This section shall not relieve the driver of an ambulance from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons, nor shall this section protect the driver from the consequences of his ordinary negligence or reckless disregard for the safety of others.
