(a) An abandoned sign is any sign for which the use to which it had applied has changed or the property containing the use has become vacant.

(b) A property owner shall either: (i) remove an abandoned sign that has been located on the property for more than six months; or (ii) shall cover the sign. For the purpose of this section, “covered” shall mean all sign copy including graphics is rendered invisible by being painted over, removed, replaced, or shielded by a rigid and opaque material.

(c) For a nonconforming abandoned sign that has been located on the property for more than 24 months, the property owner shall remove it.

(d) Notwithstanding subsection (b) of this section, a property owner shall remove a nonconforming abandoned sign immediately when the primary building on the property is demolished or removed.

(e) Any abandoned sign shall comply with this section on or after October 1, 2020.

(f) Upon removal, all parts of the sign, including structural supports, shall be removed. (Ord. 20207 § 11, 9-10-19.)
